About This Project

Ikiam represents a landmark project of over 50 Ha, creating one of Ecuador’s four planned new universities and the world’s only, 1st-class university campus to be located in the Amazon region. In this project it was paramount that the buildings and infrastructure were designed to co-exist in harmony with the surrounding areas. To this extent Evolution formed a core team of expert engineers and sociologists, who acted as technical bridge between the architects, ministry and end users. This enabled sustainable design strategies to be developed hand-in-hand with the architectural team, before then being incorporated into the detailed engineering designs. In order to do this it was necessary to translate architectural concepts into engineering design parameters, using Evolutions in-house excel models for water management and EnergyPlus for materials, ventilation and bioclimatic design. Lastly, Evolution’s social research work was harnessed in order to assess the engineering options that stood most chance of being welcomed by the end users of the university, as well as community members of the surrounding areas.
